David DeMarco, the new owner of Mountain Paws in Idyllwild, joined the podcast to share his story and vision for the beloved local pet store. Six months ago, David’s path to ownership began serendipitously during a hike and visit to the town. A simple inquiry at the visitor center about local businesses for sale led him to take over Mountain Paws in November. Since then, David has embraced the transition from the service industry to retail, navigating the challenges of inventory management and seasonal shifts. Currently, the store, a dog-friendly haven, is known for its wide variety of pet products, like toys, accessories, treats, and even dog puzzles. It’s also a gathering spot for dog owners, locals, and tourists, offering unique items such as Eddie Bauer dog sweaters and light-up dog balls.

David spoke about his plans to expand the store’s offerings, such as adding baked goods, cat and bird products, and other curated essentials. He’s particularly passionate about providing high-quality, healthy options for pets and working with local crafters through the store’s consignment initiative. Additionally, Mountain Paws stands out for its community involvement, partnering with animal rescues for adoption events, including one that recently found a new home for a four-month-old husky mix named Charm. David, now a member of the Rotary Club, hopes to contribute to Idyllwild’s welcoming, dog-friendly atmosphere by fostering connections and offering a space where visitors and their furry companions feel at home.
